Please kindly note the following:
1) The registration letter for National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) is given to your child today. Please take the necessary action if your child is participating in the competition.
2) The Fractions worksheets are returned today. You may wish to note the following:
a. Common misconception for word problems (Fractions of a set VS Fractions with units) :
Mrs Lo bought 5/8 litres of oil. She used 1/3 of it for
cooking. How many litres of oil did she use?Some
of the kids may just write 5/8 – 1/3 as their equation as they do not see the difference between 1/3 litres and 1/3 of 5/8 litres.
b. They also learn dealing with word problems relating to Fractions of a remainder. “Mr Sah sold 1/3 of his satay in the afternoon and 1/2 of the remainder in the evening.” To solve such questions, they can either draw model or use the branching method.

c. For workbook, they need to be careful of the usage of equal sign when converting fraction to decimal. Half a mark will be deducted if your child writes 11/3 = 3.666. Your child should either use an approximate sign or write 11/3 = 3.67 (to 2 decimal places)
d. For Bridging worksheets, they have to be more careful when they are reading the question to see what the question requires them to do. In their haste to complete the work, many unnecessary careless mistakes were made.
e. For Core worksheets:
i. C3: They need to be more careful as Qn 6 and Qn 7 are asking for the total amount of cloth used and meat bought respectively..
ii. C6: They need to be more careful as Qn 2 is asking for the total number of beads that the two girls have.
iii. C7: They need to learn to be comfortable in using model to help them visualise the word problems. Qn 2 and Qn 4 can be easily solved if they are able to draw the model correctly.
f. For Enriched worksheet Qn 2, they need to know that the 54 black beads in the end is the same as 3/5 of the black beads at first. Once they are able to establish this, they will be able to work out the number of white beads that was gotten from the exchange.
